How do you know if you need an electrical panel change?

If your home is older than 25 years old and still has its original panel, chances are you have the following type of electrical panels that are known to be the cause of recent electrical fires:

• Federal Pacific – found that 25% of all panels are defective and its breakers may not properly trip – installed between the 1950s-1980s
• Zinsco – these are unable to keep up with today’s electrical demands causing its bus bars to melt – used up into the mid-1970s
• Sylvania – these were pretty much Zinco panels with a different label 
• Challenger – these overheat even under normal conditions at the bus bar – installed between the 1980s-1990s

Electrical Panel Change vs Panel Upgrade? 

Panel Change – An electrical panel change is when we change your existing electrical panel to a similarly sized one. For example, an existing 100 Amp to a new 100 Amp panel. The meter socket size is also taken into consideration.  

How would one know the size of your existing panel? It would be marked on the label on the cover, on the main breaker, or in the interior of the panel. (Please do not attempt to open an electrical cover, this could be very dangerous)

Panel Upgrade –  A panel upgrade is when we go from a smaller-sized panel to a larger one. For example, going from a 100 Amp to a 200 Amp. The Meter socket will also have to match the new panel size or will also have to be upgraded.  

Why would a panel upgrade be needed? For many reasons:

2. Need more breaker space for newer, bigger appliances

How much does a panel change cost in 2023? Where your panel is located will determine the price. You should expect to pay anywhere from $2925+ for a panel change (not including permitting), same size, in the same location. (Cannot be in a bathroom, clothes closet, or anywhere where there is not a 3ft clearance in front of the new electrical panel installation)
